Positioning

The land of Gan and Po, "rich in natural treasures and outstanding people": Mount Lu, Mount Sanqing and Mount Longhu stand alongside Jingdezhen ceramics, the pastoral scenery of Wuyuan and the revolutionary sites of Jinggangshan.

02

Culture & Background

History: Mount Lu was inscribed in 1996 as World Cultural Heritage; Mount Sanqing was inscribed in 2008 as World Natural Heritage. White Deer Grotto Academy was one of the famous Song-dynasty academies, ranked alongside Yuelu Academy and others; Jingdezhen has been famous for porcelain since the Song dynasty, with imperial kilns, folk kilns and export porcelain as its historical foundation; Tengwang Pavilion is famous for Wang Bo's "Preface to Tengwang Pavilion", but the present pavilion is a reconstruction and should not be described as an original Tang structure. Jinggangshan is an important site in the history of China's revolutionary base areas; visits should follow the historical exhibitions. Legend: Explanations of Mount Lu's name "Kuanglu" and of Celestial Master Zhang subduing demons on Mount Longhu are mostly Legend; the "Devil's Triangle" story about the Laoye Temple waters of Lake Poyang is a Legend-type rumour — wind, waves and undercurrents on the lake are real navigation risks and accidents should not be explained by legend.

Getting Around

Intercity: high-speed rail serves Nanchang West, Jiujiang, Lushan, Jingdezhen North, Shangrao, Wuyuan and other stations; Nanchang to Mount Lu, Jingdezhen and Wuyuan is mostly on the order of one hour, subject to 12306 services that day. In town: Nanchang and Jiujiang have buses and metro (Nanchang); scenic areas mostly provide shuttle buses, and Mount Lu scenic transport requires a separate shuttle ticket, on the order of tens of yuan, subject to official announcement. Rural areas: villages in Wuyuan are linked mainly by county and township buses and chartered cars, with infrequent services, so leave a margin for the return trip; Mount Longhu and Mount Sanqing have winding mountain roads, so drive carefully. Tickets and payment: high-speed rail on 12306, advance booking for most scenic areas, and buses mostly accept transit codes and cash (subject to local announcement).

05

Etiquette & Taboos

  • Red Line: Do not carve on hanging coffins, ancient kiln sites or academy relics; in Taoist and Buddhist sites, follow signs on no photography and no smoking, with violations handled under site rules.
  • Taboo: ① In Jingdezhen workshops, do not casually pick up other people's unfired blanks or glazes — compensation at price for damage is a common trade rule, so ask the price before handling anything. ② In Jinggangshan and other memorial venues, do not talk or laugh loudly or pose disrespectfully for photos.
  • Good Manners: Wuyuan villagers' drying grounds and vegetable plots are production and living spaces — greet people before photographing and do not trample crops; Mount Lu's summit has large temperature differences and strong wind, so follow scenic-area notices on cable-car suspensions.

Practical Tips

Mount Lu is a summer retreat, but a jacket is still needed on the summit; Wuyuan rapeseed flowers are around February–March, so choose weekdays to avoid crowds; when buying porcelain in Jingdezhen, first ask about firing, glaze and return/exchange rules, and ask for proper packaging for valuable pieces; the Lake Poyang birdwatching season is mostly autumn and winter — do not feed or disturb birds.
