Getting Around

  • Intercity: Nanning East is the hub, with high-speed rail in about 2.5–3 hours to Guilin and about 3–4 hours to Guangzhou (subject to official announcements); Guilin, Liuzhou, Beihai and Baise mostly have high-speed rail. Nanning Wuxu and Guilin Liangjiang airports are the main air gateways, with airports also in Beihai and Liuzhou.
  • In cities: Nanning has a metro covering Chaoyang Square, East Station and other core areas; metro and bus fares are typically a few yuan. Guilin, Liuzhou and Beihai rely mainly on buses, taxis and ride-hailing; Yangshuo and Longsheng are mostly reached by coach or chartered car.
  • Rural and island areas: Li River cruises mostly depart from Guilin and Yangshuo docks; Longji Terraces and Detian Waterfall have no direct high-speed rail and are reached by coach plus shuttle. Weizhou Island requires a ferry from Beihai; schedules and fares are subject to official announcements, and ferries may be suspended in typhoon season.
  • Tickets and payment: Rail tickets are real-name via 12306; metro and buses accept transit cards and mobile QR. Prices and fines are given only as magnitudes and are subject to official announcements.

Etiquette & Taboos

  • Red Line: In Zhuang, Miao, Dong and other ethnic villages, follow on-site rules at wind-and-rain bridges, drum towers and ritual sites, and do not photograph in no-photography zones. In ecological areas such as the Li River and terraces, do not litter or enter water without permission. Observe border-management rules in border areas (subject to official announcements).
  • Taboo: Two pitfalls outsiders most often hit: (1) photographing villagers or children in ethnic villages without permission, or entering the inner rooms of stilt houses at will; (2) trampling terrace ridges at Longji or entering unopened fields for photos. Also, do not heckle or interrupt performances at song fairs and festivals; drink only as much as you wish and do not pressure others (unverified: customs vary locally, follow the host).
  • Good Manners: Greet on entering a village and walk according to village rules. Respect local food customs at meals and avoid waste. Queue in order at cruise docks and terrace viewpoints, without cutting in line.
