History: Tianjin was established as a garrison in the Ming dynasty; canal transport, the Hai River and the modern concessions together shaped the city's layout. The Five Great Avenues retain many early-20th-century Western-style buildings; the Italian Style Area centres on Marco Polo Square, and Jiefang North Road was the modern financial street; Ancient Culture Street centres on Tianhou Palace, first built around the Qianlong era of the Qing dynasty (subject to on-site exhibitions). Clay Figure Zhang, Yangliuqing New Year woodblock prints and Kite Wei are representative Tianjin intangible heritage. Tianjin dialect belongs to northern dialects and is highly distinctive in tone; crosstalk, storytelling and clapper talk are local quyi traditions. Legend: Terms such as "Tianjin Garrison" and "the lower reaches of nine rivers" are figurative historical-geographical summaries, not administrative names; guides' stories about a "famous person spending the night" in a concession villa are mostly Legend — follow former-residence exhibitions and archives, and do not treat anecdotes as history.
Arriving: Tianjin, Tianjin West and Tianjin South stations are rail hubs; high-speed rail from Beijing to Tianjin is about half an hour; Binhai International Airport is in Binhai New Area, so allow about an hour for trips to and from the city centre. In town: metro lines 1, 2, 3 and others cover the Five Great Avenues, the Italian Style Area, Ancient Culture Street and the Hai River; Xiaobailou station on line 1 is near the Five Great Avenues, and Jianguodao and Dongnanjiao stations on line 2 are near the Italian Style Area and Ancient Culture Street respectively; the Five Great Avenues area is best on foot or by shared bike, while driving on holidays may meet restrictions and parking difficulties. Tickets and payment: metro and buses accept transit cards and transit codes, with single fares on the order of a few yuan; Hai River cruises are best booked online in advance, with prices subject to official and platform announcements; for taxis, avoid station touts and prefer licensed taxis and ride-hailing.
Spring and autumn are the more comfortable seasons; summer midday sun is fierce and winter Hai River winds are cold. The Five Great Avenues streets are free, while individual former residences and exhibition halls charge separately, on the order of tens of yuan, per on-site notice; Ancient Culture Street and the Italian Style Area streets are free; on rainy days switch to indoor sites such as the Tianjin Museum and the Porcelain House.
