Culture & Background

  • History: Mount Tai is chief of the Five Great Mountains; emperors of successive dynasties performed fengshan sacrifices there, represented by Dai Temple, the Eighteen Bends and the South Heavenly Gate. Qufu's Confucius Temple, Kong Family Mansion and Confucius Cemetery are together called the "Three Confucian Sites", core remains of Confucian culture; Confucius (551–479 BCE) founded Confucianism. Jinan is famed for springs, represented by Baotu Spring and Daming Lake. Qingdao is a modern treaty-port city; Badaguan, Zhanqiao and the Qingdao Beer Museum area preserve modern buildings and industrial heritage. Weifang kites, Zibo ceramics and glass, and Yantai apples are local products and crafts. Lu cuisine is one of China's traditional cuisines, with Kong Family cuisine as a branch.
  • Legend: Legends of many miraculous episodes when Qin Shi Huang and Emperor Wu of Han climbed Mount Tai for fengshan are legend; the fengshan itself is history, and miraculous details must not be taken as reliable history. The claim that Penglai's mirages are a fairyland is also legend; a mirage itself is an atmospheric optical phenomenon, explained by meteorology.

Etiquette & Taboos

  • Red Line: In ritual buildings such as the Confucius Temple and Dai Temple keep quiet, do not climb ancient cypresses or steles, and do not photograph in no-photography zones; in the Mount Tai reserve do not leave trails or use fire outdoors.
  • Taboo: ① In Confucius Temple, academies and similar places do not joke about Confucius statues or plaques, and do not enter halls in slippers or vests (subject to venue notices); ② at seaside bathing beaches do not enter deep water without authorisation or swim in no-swimming zones.
  • Good Manners: On Mount Tai give way to walkers going up and down, and for night climbs bring a headlamp and warm clothing; when tasting Lu and Kong Family cuisine respect shared-dish customs and elders eating first (subject to the host at the table).
  • Common pitfalls for visitors: ① Night-climbing Mount Tai in only short sleeves — the summit is cold and windy at night and hypothermia is a risk, so bring a windproof jacket; ② buying seafood in Qingdao markets without clarifying the pricing unit and processing fee easily causes disputes — ask the price first.
