Getting Around
- Intercity: Kunming is the hub, with high-speed rail in about 2 hours to Dali, about 3.5–5 hours to Lijiang, and about 1.5 hours from Lijiang to Shangri-La (subject to official announcements). Kunming Changshui, Lijiang, Dali, Shangri-La and Xishuangbanna airports serve the province; the China–Laos Railway also links Kunming toward Vientiane.
- In cities: Kunming Metro Line 6 links Changshui Airport with downtown; Dali and Lijiang old towns are mostly walked, and Erhai Lake is often circled by e-bike or chartered car. Taxis and ride-hailing are convenient in highland cities, but mountain roads are slippery in the rainy season.
- Rural and highland areas: Yuanyang Terraces, Dongchuan Red Land and Tiger Leaping Gorge have no direct high-speed rail and are reached by coach or chartered car. Shangri-La and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain are high (Shangri-La about 3,300 m; the Jade Dragon cable car reaches about 4,500 m) — ascend slowly, drink water, and descend and seek care if unwell (subject to official announcements).
- Tickets and payment: Rail tickets are real-name via 12306; metro and bus fares are typically a few yuan, accepting transit cards and mobile QR. Prices and fines are given only as magnitudes and are subject to official announcements.
