Naiki area, Fukuchiyama City, Kyoto Prefecture, now Fukuchiyama Castle Park; a hill castle whose present keep, rebuilt in 1986, houses a local history museum, with original stone walls and a deep well as highlights.

Know before you go

  • Red lines: do not climb stone walls
  • do not touch museum exhibits. Taboos: do not talk loudly or enter non-public areas inside the keep
  • do not treat reused gravestones as novelty photo props. Good manners: wear suitable shoes for the slope and follow the museum route in order. Common pitfalls: (1) assuming the present keep is Mitsuhide's original — it is a 1986 reconstruction, and most exhibits concern the Edo Fukuchiyama domain, with relatively little on Mitsuhide
