History
Gala's century-old wild peach trees
Gala is a hamlet under Zhenba Village, home to 33 households and just over 150 people, and it has 1,253 wild peach trees more than a hundred years old. The 23rd Nyingchi Peach Blossom Tourism and Culture Festival opened on 3 April 2026, and Gala is one of the most popular places to see the blossoms.
History
Suosong on the canyon's edge
Suosong Village sits on the edge of the Yarlung Tsangpo gorge in Mainling, cut off by the great river in front and backed by mountains, with only a small path along the gorge leading out. It faces Namcha Barwa, where you can see snow, drifting cloud and the golden light of sunrise in every season.

Background
Nyingchi averages about 3,000 metres above sea level, well below Lhasa at about 3,650 metres. Here the Yarlung Tsangpo has carved one of the deepest canyons on Earth: the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon runs for more than 490 km and reaches 5,382 metres at its deepest. Namcha Barwa rises to 7,782 metres, its summit often wrapped in cloud. The peach blossom is Nyingchi's city flower. Gala Village beside National Highway 318 in Bayi District is a well-known peach-blossom village, and Suosong Village in Mainling, on the edge of the Yarlung Tsangpo gorge and facing Namcha Barwa, is the place to see snow peaks and blossoms together. Basum Tso, the Lulang forest and Tibetan villages are scattered across the region.
Local customs
See the peach blossoms at Gala and Suosong villages in late March, spend a night in Suosong waiting for sunrise to light up Namcha Barwa, ride the park bus into the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon, visit Basum Tso and the Lulang forest, and try Lulang stone-pot chicken.

Travel tips
- Nyingchi is at about 3,000 metres, so still watch for altitude sickness and take things slowly. Entering Tibet requires a Tibet Travel Permit arranged through a registered travel agency, following the official rules in force at the time. Lodging is tight in blossom season, so book ahead.
- Fly to Nyingchi Mainling Airport, or drive about four hours from Lhasa on the Lhasa–Nyingchi highway
- inside the canyon and lake parks you must switch to park transport. The blossom season in March and April is the most famous, when the Nyingchi Peach Blossom Tourism and Culture Festival is usually held
- from May to October the valleys are green and good for hiking.
