Matsugasaki Park, the former Yonezawa Castle site, in Yonezawa City, Yamagata Prefecture, with Uesugi Shrine inside; reachable on foot or by bus from JR Yonezawa Station.

Know before you go

  • Red lines: do not make loud noise in shrine grounds or enter the main hall's closed area. Taboos: do not block rituals to take photos, and do not touch armour exhibits. Good manners: wash hands and rinse the mouth before worship and keep to one side of the approach. Common mistakes for outsiders: (1) expecting a surviving castle keep — only the castle site park remains, with no original keep
  • (2) visiting only the shrine in cherry season and missing the park's night illumination and festival times.

Background

the first castle here dates to the mid-Kamakura period (around 1238, Nagai family); in the Sengoku period it was a Date castle, and Date Masamune was born at Yonezawa Castle in 1567; after Sekigahara, Uesugi Kagekatsu was transferred to Yonezawa, and the Uesugi held the castle for about 260 years in the Edo period; the castle was demolished in 1873, leaving moats and stone walls, now Matsugasaki Park, and Uesugi Shrine enshrines Uesugi Kenshin and others.
