Background
The site, in Honghuagang District of Zunyi, was originally the private residence of Bai Huizhang, commander of the 2nd Division of the 25th Army of the Guizhou (Qian) forces. Built in the 1930s, it is a two-storey brick-and-timber house with verandas and colonnades on all four sides, covering about 528 square metres. In early January 1935 the First Front Army of the Red Army reached Zunyi on the Long March, and from 15 to 17 January the enlarged meeting of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China's Central Committee — the Zunyi Conference — was held here. The meeting criticised the military command during the Fifth Counter-Encirclement Campaign and the early Long March, elected Mao Zedong to the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau, and ended the military command previously led by Bo Gu and Li De (Otto Braun). The Zunyi Conference Memorial Hall was established here in 1955, and Mao Zedong inscribed its name in 1964. The building also displays the former quarters and offices of Zhou Enlai, Zhu De, Liu Bocheng, Ye Jianying, Peng Dehuai, Yang Shangkun and others.
