Australia & New Zealand
The Southern Hemisphere flips the seasonal table entirely: when the Northern Hemisphere is in winter, Australia is in high summer (December–February), with beaches, the Great Ocean Road, and Tasmania's lavender and festivals in full swing; the north — Cairns and Darwin — divides instead into dry and wet seasons: the dry season of May–October suits the Great Barrier Reef and Kakadu, while the wet season brings spectacular waterfalls but muggy heat and mosquitoes. Autumn (March–May) is the season of wine regions and highlands, with red leaves and harvest framed together in the Barossa and the Yarra Valley; winter (June–August) means skiing in the south and warmth in the north, and a chance to catch the coastal whale-watching season as well. Uluru in the interior is at its best in spring and autumn, and its color-changing show at dawn and dusk is a required course.
