Cleopatra VII, Greek: Κλεοπάτρα Φιλοπάτωρ, full name Cleopatra VII Thea Philopator

Cleopatra VII · 埃及

c. 70/69–30 BC, last queen of the Ptolemaic dynasty and Egypt's last actual ruler.

Born in Alexandria, she succeeded on the death of her father Ptolemy XII in 51 BC, successively co-ruling with two brothers and a son; she allied with the Roman commanders Caesar and Antony to maintain Egypt's independence, and after Antony was defeated by Octavian in 30 BC she died by suicide (the exact cause of death has a suicide account and an account of assassination by Octavian, uncertain; the exact date has two accounts, 30 August and 10 August, so this draft writes only the year), after which Egypt was annexed by Rome.

Cultural significance

One of the most famous female rulers of the ancient world; she was the only monarch of the Ptolemaic dynasty to learn the Egyptian language, and her image, constantly reshaped through Shakespeare's plays and later literature and art, has become a cultural symbol of Egypt and the classical world.
