Second and last emperor of the Empire of Brazil, reigning 1831–1889, known as "the Magnanimous".

Born on 2 December 1825 at the São Cristóvão Palace, Rio de Janeiro, he was the son of Pedro I and Archduchess Leopoldina of Austria; after his father's abdication in 1831 he acceded at age 5 and was declared of age early in 1840; during his reign Brazil achieved political stability, freedom of speech, and a functioning parliamentary system, and went through the Platine War, the Uruguayan War, and the Paraguayan War; he supported and promoted the abolition of slavery in Brazil in 1888; in the military coup of 1889 he was deposed and exiled to Europe; he died in Paris on 5 December 1891, and his remains were returned to Brazil in 1921 (the exact church of burial is not consistent across this batch's sources, uncertain).

Cultural significance

Brazil's longest-reigning and most stable monarch, and a patron of Brazilian science, education, and culture; his abolitionist stance and the respect he still enjoyed from the people after his exile make him a complex symbol in the narrative of Brazil's transition from empire to republic.
