Edvard Munch

Edvard Munch · 挪威

19th–20th-century Norwegian painter and printmaker, a pioneer of Expressionism (1863–1944).

Born in Løten (Ådalsbruk), he experienced the deaths of his mother and sister from illness in childhood and studied painting in Christiania (now Oslo); in the 1890s he explored love, anxiety, and death in the *Frieze of Life* series, and his representative work *The Scream* (1893) became a symbol of modern spiritual anxiety; in 1892–1897 he was mainly active in Berlin and Paris, settled in Norway after 1910, and died in 1944 at Ekely near Oslo.
