1686–1758, Norwegian–Danish Lutheran missionary, known as the "Apostle of Greenland" and founder of Nuuk.

Born in Harstad, Norway, he was ordained as a priest in 1707; in 1721 he led a fleet to Greenland's west coast, originally seeking the lost Norse settlements, and, not finding them, turned to preaching to the Inuit people and learning their language; in 1728 he founded Godthåb (now Nuuk), and later became Bishop of Greenland; he died in 1758 in Falster, Denmark. His mission at the same time opened Denmark's continuing colonial presence in Greenland, and its impact on Inuit society remains controversial to this day; this draft does not offer one-sided praise.
