1847–1934, leader of New Zealand's women's suffrage movement, who helped make New Zealand the world's first self-governing country in which women won the parliamentary vote (1893).

Born in Liverpool, England, she moved to Christchurch as a young person and married in 1871; in 1885 she joined the New Zealand Women's Christian Temperance Union, from 1887 led its suffrage campaign, organising petitions, writing pamphlets, and lobbying members of parliament; the third petition in 1893 gathered nearly 32,000 signatures (270 metres long), and the *Electoral Act 1893* came into force on 19 September that year; in 1896 she took part in founding the National Council of Women of New Zealand and served as its first president, dying in Christchurch in 1934.
