Leonhard Euler · 瑞士

18th-century Swiss mathematician and physicist (1707–1783).

Born in Basel, he graduated from the University of Basel and went to the Saint Petersburg Academy of Sciences, served as director of the mathematics section of the Berlin Academy in 1741–1766, and returned to Saint Petersburg in 1766; he authored more than 800 works in his lifetime, laid the foundations of analysis, introduced notations such as e and Σ, and proposed Euler's formula e^{ix} = cos x + i sin x; in later life, though almost blind in both eyes, he continued to dictate his works.
