Pōmare IV, full name ʻAimata Pōmare IV Vahine-o-Punuateraʻitua

Pōmare IV · 法属波利尼西亚

1813–1877, Queen of Tahiti (reigned 1827–1877 for fifty years), the longest-reigning monarch of the Pōmare dynasty.

Born on 28 February 1813 in Pare, she succeeded at 14 on the death of her brother Pōmare III; in 1831 she invited the Pitcairn Islanders to return to Tahiti (many later died of disease, and the survivors were taken back by whaling ships); in 1842 France declared Tahiti a protectorate, and the Franco-Tahitian War broke out in 1844–1847, after which she continued to rule under French supervision until her death on 17 September 1877 at the royal palace, Papeete; her son Pōmare V ceded the kingdom to France in 1880, ending the dynasty.
