Pope Julius II / Giuliano della Rovere

Pope Julius II · 梵蒂冈

Renaissance-era Pope and patron of the arts (1443–1513, reigned 1503–1513).

Born in Albisola (now Italy), he was elected Pope in 1503; in 1506 he laid the foundation stone of the new St. Peter's Basilica and commissioned Bramante to rebuild it; he commissioned Michelangelo to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel and Raphael to decorate the Papal Apartments (the Raphael Rooms), and laid the collecting foundation of the Vatican Museums; he died in 1513 and was buried in St. Peter's Basilica (Michelangelo's "Tomb of Julius" in San Pietro in Vincoli, Rome, is only a reduced memorial tomb, not his actual burial place — the two must be distinguished).
