Simón Bolívar, full name Simón José Antonio de la Santísima Trinidad Bolívar y Palacios

Simón Bolívar · 玻利维亚

Early-19th-century South American independence leader, known as the "Liberator", first president of Bolivia (1825).

**Special note: Bolívar was born on 24 July 1783 in Caracas, Venezuela, not in Bolivia; Bolivia's name was taken in his honour.** He led the wars that freed Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Panama, and other places from Spanish rule, founded Gran Colombia in 1819 and served as its president; after his army's victory in Peru in 1824, Upper Peru (today's Bolivia region) became independent in 1825 and was named Bolivia after him, and he briefly served as the country's first president; he died on 17 December 1830 near Santa Marta, Gran Colombia.

Cultural significance

Bolivia's very name is the most direct mark of his historical legacy; the name "Bolívar" also appears in Venezuela's country name and in squares, streets, and monuments across Latin America, and is the core symbol of the South American independence narrative.
