History
Three halls planned, one built
When the National Central Museum was being prepared in 1933, Cai Yuanpei proposed three major halls: humanities, crafts and nature. Because of the political instability of the time, only the humanities hall was built, and it is today's old hall.

Background
The Nanjing Museum stands in the Banshan Garden area inside Zhongshan Gate in Nanjing. It grew out of the preparatory office of the National Central Museum, set up in 1933, with Cai Yuanpei as its first preparatory director. Today the museum consists of the old hall and newer halls built later: the History Hall, Art Hall, Republic of China Hall, Intangible Cultural Heritage Hall, Digital Hall and Special Exhibition Hall, with a permanent collection of more than 400,000 items. Note that the Nanjing Museum and the Nanjing Municipal Museum are two different museums.
