Background

During the Córdoba Patios Festival, residents open the courtyards they live in and tend every day to visitors. UNESCO inscribed the festival on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2012; the point is not only the flowerpots and architecture, but also the way neighbours jointly maintain the space, share knowledge and welcome guests. The patios are spread among many houses in the historic centre rather than being a single fixed sight; each household's layout, plants and way of taking part are different. The dates for 2027 published by the City of Córdoba are 3 to 16 May; the participating patios and events must still be confirmed from that year's official route map.

Local customs

The open patios are still private or shared living spaces. Queue as directed at the door, talk quietly, and ask permission before photographing residents or indoor living areas. In narrow lanes and at peak times, keep your stops short and leave the way clear for residents, neighbours and other visitors.

Religion & beliefs

  • The festival centres on community life, architecture and gardening traditions and is not a religious ceremony
  • decorations in some patios may include individual families' religious elements, but you cannot infer from this that all patios share a religious theme.

Spain: Cover your shoulders and knees and take off your hat in churches

Do

  • Wear a top that covers your shoulders and trousers or a skirt below the knee
  • Take off your hat once you are inside
  • Carry a light shawl or cardigan to cover up on hot days
  • Keep quiet during Mass or prayers and watch from the back
  • Rules vary by church: follow the signs at the door and the staff

Don’t

  • Don't wear sleeveless tops, shorts above the knee, miniskirts or swimwear
  • Don't go in barefoot
  • Don't walk around the nave or talk loudly during Mass

The Sagrada Família enforces its dress code at the entrance for visitors of all ages, so you may be turned away if you do not comply; even where you get in, revealing clothes offend worshippers.

Travel tips

  • The City of Córdoba has approved 3 to 16 May as the period of the Patios Festival and competition in its 2027 festival calendar, so the year's dates can be marked as verified
  • but the list of patios, daily opening hours, queuing arrangements and temporary closures must still be confirmed once that year's official programme is published. The patios are spread throughout the historic centre
  • we suggest using the city's or tourist office's route map for the year to choose one area first—visiting three to five patios takes about 2–3 hours
  • with queuing, photography and walking between quarters, half a day is more comfortable. May days are often hot, so carry water and sun protection
  • when queues at doors are long, do not block neighbours' passageways. There is no single precise pin that represents all the patios
  • if a map is needed, it can only use an indicative point in Córdoba with a note that the festival takes place at multiple sites, and a single patio must not be given as the address of the whole event. The cover photo was taken in a patio during the 2017 festival and does not represent the 2027 participant list.

2027 schedule

  • The 2027 Patios Festival is scheduled for 3 to 16 May
  • open patios, routes and booking arrangements are subject to that year's official route map.
