Background

According to the City of Nice, the Musée Matisse opened in 1963 in the Villa des Arènes in Cimiez, holding works and personal belongings given to the city by Matisse and his heirs. The collection spans painting, sculpture, prints, drawings and cut-outs, letting you follow the changes in his style and understand the artist's long relationship with the city. The historic villa and its later extension are themselves worth noticing. Specific galleries and works may change because of loans and conservation, so no particular work can be guaranteed to be on show.

Local customs

  • Follow the museum's route through the permanent and temporary exhibitions, checking the gallery notices at the entrance first. If you walk on to the nearby Cimiez archaeological site or gardens, tell apart the opening boundaries of the museum, the site and the park
  • do not treat them as one ticket or one venue.

Religion & beliefs

  • Some of Matisse's works have religious subjects, but the museum is an art institution
  • simply view quietly and follow the photography rules.
