History
A gift made by a sculptor and an engineer together
The Statue of Liberty was a gift from France to the United States, designed by the sculptor Bartholdi. The internal iron framework was originally the responsibility of Viollet-le-Duc; after his death, Bartholdi turned to Eiffel in 1881, who completed the design of the internal structure. The statue was erected in 1886 on Liberty Island at the entrance to New York Harbor.

Background
A gift from France for the centenary of American independence: the sculptor Bartholdi designed its form and Eiffel its inner steel frame (yes, the tower man). Over a century it welcomed 12 million immigrants entering through Ellis Island — 'Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses', the poem engraved on its pedestal. Today, climb to the crown and through its 25 small windows lies the Manhattan skyline — liberty given a concrete shape.
