Background

'Niagara' is often said to mean 'thundering water' in an Indigenous language. In the tourist season more than 168,000 m³ of water a minute flows over the crest by day (about 2,832 m³ a second, most of it over the Horseshoe Falls), and Hornblower boats nose through the spray; the Canadian side has the best views, and the night-time light shows and frozen winter falls each have their charms. It's North America's honeymoon capital and a 'natural totem' for Canadians.

Local customs

  • Canadians are polite and mild, and queue in an orderly way
  • boats and towers mostly need tickets in advance
  • tipping culture is the same as in the US (15–20%).

Religion & beliefs

  • A natural wonder
  • no religious affiliation.
