Background
'Bondi' is said to mean 'the sound of breaking waves' in an Aboriginal language. It's the birthplace of Australian surfing, lifesaving (the reality show 'Bondi Rescue') and Christmas 'beach parties'; the 6-km clifftop walk from Bondi to Coogee links one little cove after another, and the weekend Bondi Markets and skate park embody Sydneysiders' 'work hard, beach harder' philosophy.
Local customs
- Australia's beach culture is mature: swim between the red and yellow flags (the lifeguard-patrolled zone)
- surf in the designated areas
- clean up after beach barbecues.
Religion & beliefs
- A secular leisure spot with no religious character
- Christmas beach gatherings are a distinctive secular Australian tradition.
