Background
The Fløibanen funicular runs from central Bergen to the upper station on Mount Fløyen; it is both a means of transport and a journey that helps you understand the city's terrain. The operator records that the funicular opened on 15 January 1918, after the original project was delayed by funding problems, and its cars and facilities have since been renewed. The line is about 848 metres long, the upper station is about 320 metres above sea level, and the ride usually takes about 6 minutes. The hilltop viewing platform and the actual summit are not exactly the same geographical point; most visitors look at the harbour from the upper station, and you can also continue onto the mountain trails. This is an urban leisure space, not the departure pier for Norwegian fjord cruises.
Local customs
- The funicular is both public transport and a sightseeing line
- follow the operator's signs in queues, cars and on platforms. The mountain trails are strongly affected by the weather
- before taking a route away from the main viewing area, confirm the path and the way back
- parents should watch their children and not linger on slopes or beside the tracks.
Religion & beliefs
- The mountain and funicular have no particular religious etiquette
- visitors and local residents share the transport and leisure spaces, so follow the requirements on queuing, quiet and protecting the mountain environment.

Travel tips
- The operator gives the lower station's address as Vetrlidsallmenningen 23A in central Bergen, not far from the Fish Market and Bryggen
- the ride to the upper station usually takes about 6 minutes, but allow extra time for queues, sightseeing and the return. To ride the funicular just for the city views, allow 60–90 minutes
- with a short hilltop walk or a rest, allow 2–3 hours, while longer hikes must be planned according to the actual route and weather. Ticketing, frequency and the rules for stopping at intermediate stations change with the season and time of day, so do not rely on fixed timetables from old guides instead of the official notices for the day. The map location is near the upper station
- the lower station is in the city centre, and the summit itself lies beyond the upper station, so the three should not be confused. When the operator's home page was checked on 30 October 2026, it announced a planned maintenance closure from 2 to 5 November
- if you plan to go on those dates, check again before setting out. Wind and rain on the hilltop can be much stronger than at the harbour, so bring waterproof and warm clothing
- in poor visibility you can switch to the old harbour and indoor activities.
