Background

MUNCH's new building in Bjørvika, Oslo, opened in 2021 and collects and displays works by Edvard Munch and other artists. The museum explains that its core collection comes from Munch's bequest, including paintings, prints, photographs, writings, tools and personal belongings. Exhibitions rotate by floor and period, so no single work can represent the whole collection; The Scream also exists in different versions, including paintings, drawings and prints. You can understand the works inside together with the neighbouring Oslofjord waterfront, but the Opera House is a separate site.

Local customs

  • The museum requires entry with timed tickets, and flash is not allowed in the galleries
  • backpacks, large handbags, liquids and umbrellas may not be taken into the galleries. Store your belongings in the lobby first, and give priority to visitors who need the accessible lifts.

Religion & beliefs

  • MUNCH is an art institution, not a place of worship
  • the works may deal with themes of life, death and faith, which should be understood through the works and labels, without equating artistic themes with site etiquette.

Practical info

Travel tips

  • The new building's address is Edvard Munchs plass 1, Oslo, about ten minutes' walk from Oslo Central Station
  • the nearest bus and tram stop is Bjørvika. The museum recommends booking timed tickets in advance
  • there are lockers on site, but they only fit hand luggage, so make separate arrangements for larger bags in advance. To see only the core Munch exhibitions, allow about 1.5–2 hours
  • with special exhibitions, moving between floors and a waterfront stroll, allow 3–4 hours. The museum publishes regular opening hours and holiday exceptions, so check the page for the day before you go
  • special events may mean earlier last entry. The museum says it displays one version of The Scream motif, but the painting, drawing and prints rotate, so do not go looking for one fixed version based on old photos. Flash is not allowed in the galleries, and personal photography is also subject to on-site signs. This page covers the new Bjørvika building, not the old museum at Tøyen used before 2021.
