Background
Merv is one of the oldest oasis cities in Central Asia, with a history going back about 4,000 years, and was once called 'Mother of the World'. Under the Seljuk Empire it was a world-class centre of learning, with libraries and an observatory. Its most important surviving monuments are the 12th-century mausoleum of the Seljuk Sultan Sanjar and the mud-brick fortresses of Great and Little Kyz Kala. It became a World Heritage Site in 1999.
