Detian Transnational Waterfall
Asia's largest and the world's fourth-largest transnational waterfall: the Guichun River pours over a three-tier cliff, half in China and half in Vietnam, and a bamboo raft can drift to the falls' heart and hear the winds of two countries.
Location
Daxin County, Chongzuo, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region
Stories and legends
The Guichun River and the falls have attached Zhuang love legends — the legendary layer.
History and context
Detian Waterfall is about 200-plus metres wide with a large average flow, at its mightiest in the high-water season; it is the same body of water as Vietnam's Ban Gioc Falls, named separately by the two countries. In 2015 China and Vietnam signed a cooperative-development agreement; the Detian (Ban Gioc) Falls Cross-Border Tourism Cooperation Zone began trial operation in 2023 and formal operation in 2024, China's first cross-border tourism cooperation zone, where visitors may tour the Vietnamese side under the rules (documents and reservations per the cooperation zone's latest official announcements).
Local life
Detian's temperament is "scenery without borders, life with them": rice fields of the same colour on both banks of the boundary river, interflowing markets (border trade at the Shuolong crossing), and Zhuang mountain songs meeting Vietnamese vendors' baguettes and coffee on the same street. Beyond the falls' grandeur, the border villages' unhurried daily life — bamboo rafts, sugarcane fields, the green of the Guichun River — forms the gentle base colour of the southern frontier.
Customs
Bamboo-raft experiences close to the falls; cross-border tours in the cooperation zone pass under roster and channel management.
Beliefs
No specific religious association; its main cultural attributes are borderland scenery and Zhuang culture.
Local etiquette
The border-control zone strictly forbids unauthorised crossing, swimming in the river and unregistered drone flights; if your documents for a cross-border tour are incomplete, do not believe in "back-path exits"; the rock surfaces in the spray zone below the falls are extremely slippery.
Visiting notes
Best on high-water-season weekdays; direct buses from Nanning take about 3.5–4 hours; take the bamboo raft in the morning (favourable light, the spray not yet at its maximum); combine with Mingshi Pastoral in one day (the pastoral is prettiest at dawn).
What to eat nearby
Daxin sour congee and rolled rice noodles (Chongzuo snacks); Shuolong roast pork (a border-trade-town flavour); Vietnamese spring rolls and baguettes (at compliant food outlets in the cooperation zone / crossing); sugarcane and suanye (pickled fruit); river fish
Shuolong Town, the dining area at the scenic area's visitor centre, and the inn cluster at Mingshi Pastoral
For cross-border food, use compliant merchants inside the cooperation zone and do not buy raw food from unlicensed vendors; sour congee is a fermented flavour — those with weak stomachs should try a little first
A full meal 60–120 yuan (for reference only)
The cooperation zone's reservation and document requirements change — the official WeChat account's same-day announcement is the sole authority; in summer bring a change of clothes (you will get wet on the raft).
