Yangshuo (Yulong River & West Street)
Bamboo rafts drift down the Yulong River through pastoral karst of small bridges and flowing water, while the aroma of beer fish on West Street mingles with many languages — the origin point of China's backpacker "global village."
Location
Yangshuo County, Guilin, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region
Stories and legends
The name Yulong River is said to come from the folk tale of "meeting a dragon at Yulong Bridge" — the legendary layer.
History and context
Yulong Bridge is a Ming-dynasty single-arch stone bridge (said to have been built in the Yongle era); Yangshuo county was established in the Sui (said to date to 590). From the 1980s West Street gathered foreign backpackers and became the "Foreigners' Street," where English-corner and rock-climbing culture took root; Yangshuo is a Chinese rock-climbing mecca (with many natural rock faces). The Yulong River's bamboo rafts are hand-poled and operate on a separate line from the motorised rafts of the Li River (ticketing per the scenic area's officials).
Local life
Yangshuo's temperament is a marvellous ratio of pastoral and international: raftsmen and rice fields at dawn, climbers on the rock faces by day, and West Street's bars and beer-fish stalls after dark. The daily routine of local Guilin rice noodles and the ease of Western cafés do not disturb each other. Fame brings disputes too — raft tickets, commentary tips and the like have been progressively standardised in recent years, and using official channels is the local consensus.
Customs
The Yulong River rafts carry two passengers, with the raftsmen's work songs; West Street has a night-market and bar-street culture; the Yangshuo Climbing Festival is an industry event (per the organisers' schedule).
Beliefs
No specific religious association; its main cultural attributes are karst pastoral scenery and backpacker culture (with Zhuang and other ethnic-village cultural displays nearby).
Local etiquette
Buy raft tickets only through official / proper piers — never buy low-price "wild raft" tickets (no safety or insurance guarantee); agree prices first on West Street (bars and portrait stalls); when the river rises in the rainy season, rafting is suspended — obey the arrangements and do not insist.
Visiting notes
Best from April to October (ample water, green mountains; avoid the Spring Festival and National Day peaks); on the Yulong River choose the prime Jinlong Bridge to Jiuxian stretch; lodging in the riverside villages (around Jima / Xiatang) is quieter than West Street; Yangshuo high-speed-rail station (at Xingping) has dedicated lines to the county town.
What to eat nearby
Beer fish (Yangshuo's signature dish, made with sword-bone fish / hair-bone fish — agree on the price when choosing the fish); Guilin rice noodles (dry-mixed with braised dishes); Lipu taro with braised pork (the famous dish of neighbouring Lipu, on the way); stuffed river snails; oil tea (of the Gongcheng line, a nearby flavour)
West Street, the local dining belt along Shenshan Road / Kangzhan Road, and farmhouses along the Yulong River
Beer fish is weighed by the kilo and is a high-dispute item — be present at the weighing and confirm the total; eat rice noodles dry-mixed first for the original flavour, then add soup — the proper Guilin way
A full meal 70–130 yuan (for reference only); beer fish 80–150 yuan per person (for reference only)
Dragging luggage over West Street's stone slabs is hard work — choose an inn that offers pickup; for climbing experiences choose a qualified club with insurance.
