Background

The poet Camões wrote this immortal line in 'The Lusiads', and it's carved on a stone monument; below the 140-m cliff facing the Atlantic lies the endless sea. The lighthouse of 1772 still guides ships today. There's no grand architecture here, only wind, sea, cliffs and the vastness of 'the end of the world' — everyone who arrives can buy a certificate at the monument proving they stood on the edge of Europe.

Local customs

  • Portuguese people are relaxed, and most sights are open-access
  • it's windy on the cliffs, so dress warmly
  • buying the certificate is optional, with no obligation to spend.

Religion & beliefs

  • No particular religious character
  • nearby Sintra's Pena Palace, Moorish Castle and other sites each have their own religious backgrounds — please be respectful when visiting.
