History
The bridge that can 'lift' its roadway
Tower Bridge was begun in 1886, designed by the architect Horace Jones with the engineer John Wolfe Barry responsible for the structure; it took eight years to build and was opened by the Prince and Princess of Wales on 30 June 1894. In the middle are two bascules that lift up to let ships pass along the Thames; the two towers are linked high up by two horizontal walkways.

Background
A neo-Gothic bascule bridge completed in 1894, commemorating the 50th year of Queen Victoria's reign. The high-level glass walkways look down on the bridge opening and closing, and the steam engines in the engine rooms tell of the heartbeat of the Industrial Revolution. Tower Bridge faces the Tower of London across the river — royal power on one side, an engineering marvel on the other — distilling memories of the golden age of 'the empire on which the sun never set'.
