Why it’s popular

This Lawson convenience store in front of Kawaguchiko Station went viral on Xiaohongshu, Instagram and TikTok for its composition of 'a blue-and-white sign with a huge Mount Fuji', and was dubbed 'the most photogenic convenience store'. In 2024, after dangerous scenes of tourists flooding into the road for photos, the town briefly put up a black screen to block the view — a globally debated 'overtourism' incident that only made the spot more famous.

Background

Convenience stores are a microcosm of modern Japanese life — 24 hours, bentō, coffee, refined and efficient; Mount Fuji is the 'sacred peak' in Japanese hearts. Putting the two in one frame juxtaposes 'the everyday and the sacred', striking a chord with the aesthetics of the social-media age.

Local customs

  • Be sure to obey traffic rules: take photos from the pavement, don't stand in the middle of the road or cross on red
  • don't shoot from nearby private homes, fields or car parks
  • be quick and don't gather for long.

Religion & beliefs

None. Mount Fuji itself is worshipped as a divine body in Shinto (Sengen faith) — just gaze at it from afar with respect.
