Osaka Tenjin Matsuri
天神祭 · Osaka
One of Japan's three great festivals, the thousand-year-old festival of Osaka Tenmangū: the 'rikutogyo' land procession by day, about 100 boats gathering on the Ōkawa for the 'funatogyo' at dusk, and about 3,000 offering fireworks lighting up the water city of Osaka at night — 'Osaka's New Year' and Japan's largest waterborne festival procession.
Know before you go
- Taboos: messing about or being disrespectful during the rites, and saying 'I only came for the fireworks'

Culture & customs
Background
It dates back to 951 and honours Sugawara no Michizane, god of learning. The 'land procession, then boat procession' format recreates the waterborne pleasures of Heian nobles, and was developed by Osaka's townspeople in the Edo period. The fireworks are 'hōnō hanabi' offered to the gods, not just a fireworks show; TV has broadcast it live since 1982, and the 2026 theme is 'immersion', showing how much national attention it gets.
Local customs
- Don't cut across the procession as it passes, and keep quiet out of respect for the deity
- don't throw anything into the water while watching the boat procession
- parts of the fireworks area (some stretches of both banks of the Ōkawa, Kawasaki Bridge and so on) are off-limits, so follow police directions
- don't block the flow of people with picnics on the road. Going in a yukata is an Osaka tradition and adds a lot to the atmosphere.
Religion & beliefs
- The grand festival of Osaka Tenmangū (Tenjin faith), whose principal deity is Sugawara no Michizane
- the 'Hokonagashi Shinji' on the morning of the eve day — a sacred spear set adrift on the Ōkawa to divine fortunes and pray for the festival's safety — is a deeply Shinto opening rite handed down for a thousand years
- rites such as the 'chinowa' grass ring at the shrine are also open to worshippers praying for success in study and good health.
