Background

In 1664 the Elector Ferdinand Maria and his wife Henriette Adelaide commissioned the architect Barelli to build this palace to celebrate the birth of their son Max II Emanuel. Successive rulers enlarged it into the main summer residence of the Wittelsbachs, Bavaria's ruling family, with a north–south façade 632 m wide — wider even than Versailles. King Maximilian I died here in 1825, and his great-grandson Ludwig II was born here on 25 August 1845; the Marstallmuseum in the palace holds Ludwig II's ornate carriages and sleighs.
