Background

Legend says a dragon descended into the sea and spat out pearls that became islands; karst peaks are scattered across an emerald sea, and it was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 1994. Fishermen have lived for generations on boats in floating villages (Cửa Vạn), and the stalactites of Sửng Sốt Cave and the monkeys of Luồn Cave are nature's masterpieces. Spending the night on a cruise in the bay and watching mist drift among the peaks at sunrise is a highlight of any trip to Vietnam.

Local customs

  • Vietnamese people are modest and courteous
  • be on time for gatherings on the boat
  • don't casually photograph floating villages (ask first)
  • tipping is optional (small amounts for porters and guides).

Religion & beliefs

  • Vietnamese Buddhism and folk beliefs intermingle, and some islands in the bay have small temples
  • keep quiet and dress appropriately when visiting.
