Stories and legends

The name Yandang derives from the legends of Yandang Lake on the summit (a reed marsh where wild geese alighted) and peaks such as Furong Peak; Xie Lingyun's clogs and Xu Xiake's three visits to Yandang belong to the literati-history layer.

History and context

Mount Yandang is a Cretaceous volcanic landform (rhyolite), formed by volcanic activity about 120 million years ago, and is ranked with Huangshan and Lushan in the Zhejiang–Anhui famous-mountain system. Lingfeng Peak, Lingyan Rock and Dalongqiu Waterfall are its "three wonders"; Dalongqiu drops about 190 metres, among China's tallest waterfalls (its flow varies enormously with the seasons). Xu Xiake came three times and left travel records; in 2005 it was listed as a Global Geopark (UNESCO Global Geoparks Network).

Local life

Yandang's temperament is both scholarly and rough-and-tumble (jianghu): the Lingyan "flying crossing" performance (cliff-top flying ropes) descends from the livelihood skills of herb gatherers and is now a show; the inn lights of Xianglingtou Village sit alongside the clear bells of mountain temples such as Nengren Temple. Wenzhou people's shrewdness shows here too — scenic transport and night-view sessions are run with great efficiency; the mountain is the same mountain, but the ways of playing it have been iterated several rounds.

Customs

Lingfeng sells separate day-view and night-view tickets — a rule unique to Yandang; the Lingyan flying crossing runs several timed shows daily (per scenic-area notice).

Beliefs

A historic famous mountain where Buddhist temples and Taoist grottoes coexist; geology and landscape culture dominate overall.

Local etiquette

Many stretches of the night-view mountain paths are unlit — keep up with the guide / your torch and never leave the path alone; the mist below the falls is slippery, so stay inside the railings; do not aim flashlights directly at the flying-crossing performers.

Visiting notes

Best in spring and summer after rain (big falls) and on clear autumn nights (crisp night views); for the Lingfeng night view, first listen to the guide's positioning, then look back on your own; a scenic shuttle-bus through-ticket saves the most legwork (per official ticketing); Yandangshan high-speed-rail station has convenient shuttle connections.
