Background
The National Railway Museum in York presents the past, present and future of the railways through rolling stock, engineering objects and archives. The museum explains that visitors can see a Japanese Shinkansen vehicle and the famous steam locomotive Mallard, and understand the manufacturing, routes and social stories behind trains through its galleries. It is the Science Museum Group's space for its railway collection and is not the same as York station itself; the route between station passages and the museum entrance also changes with the expansion works. Beyond the big locomotives, it is worth noticing how operation, maintenance and the passenger experience changed the distances between cities.
Local customs
- Follow the gallery barriers and staff directions, and do not climb on vehicles, cross barrier lines or touch objects under conservation. Interactive experiences and special events may require separate booking
- adults should supervise children near large wheels and carriage steps.
Religion & beliefs
- The railway museum is a site of industrial and transport history with no particular religious etiquette
- historical materials in the museum should be read in the context of their period and social background.

Travel tips
- The museum's address is Leeman Road, York. The official website explains that there are currently two halls, Great Hall and Station Hall, with separate entrances and an outdoor walkway between them
- work on a new entrance is under way, and online maps may not reflect the access changes in time, so follow the museum's maps and signs when you arrive. You can walk there from York railway station by following the signs
- with a pushchair or wheelchair, choose the step-free route published by the museum. General admission is free, and booking a free ticket in advance at busy times can reduce waiting
- interactive activities or temporary exhibitions may have other rules. For a quick look at the key locomotives, allow about 1.5 hours
- to see both halls fully with breaks, allow 3–4 hours. The official website lists temporary gallery closures, so check the notices on the day. The large vehicles in the museum are conserved exhibits
- being allowed to look at them closely does not mean you may board or touch them. The map pin is a representative location for the museum
- confirm the entrance from your booked ticket and the signs.
