Background
When completed in 1937 it was the world's longest suspension bridge, its 'International Orange' standing out in the fog. Fog is a regular visitor to San Francisco, and the bridge sometimes appears in full and sometimes shows only its tower tops, like a mirage; cycling across to Sausalito is San Francisco's classic half day. It's also a monument of American engineering history.
Local customs
- Walking and cycling on the bridge are free
- San Francisco is hilly and windy, so dress warmly
- beware of pickpockets around Fisherman's Wharf.
Religion & beliefs
- A secular engineering landmark
- no religious affiliation.
