Background

From resort town to Australia's sixth-largest city, the Gold Coast is a byword for the 'Sunshine State': the neon of Surfers Paradise, the Hollywood fantasy of Warner Bros. Movie World, the dolphin smiles of Sea World. It's the concrete form of Australians' 'sea change' dream and the first stop for countless working-holiday makers.

Local customs

  • Beach etiquette is the same as Bondi (swim between the red and yellow flags)
  • buy theme-park tickets online in advance
  • follow Australian queuing culture.

Australian beaches: swim between the red and yellow flags

  • Swim only between the red and yellow flags where lifeguards are on duty
  • If you don't know the conditions, ask a lifeguard
  • Swimming at unpatrolled beaches or outside the flags

Outside the flags there may be rip currents, and lifeguards cannot reach you in time.
