Background
The island is home to the little penguin, found in Australia and New Zealand and only 33 cm tall. Every evening at sunset, after a day of fishing, they waddle across the beach in groups back to their burrows — this 'Penguin Parade' has gone on for decades and is Victoria's most heart-warming natural spectacle; the island's roughly 40,000 little penguins are protected by long-term conservation research, a model of ecological protection.
