Background
Hawker centres grew out of street hawkers and are found in residential, business and leisure areas, known as 'community dining rooms'. Chinese, Malay, Indian and other cuisines sit side by side, and many hawkers spend decades perfecting a single dish, passing their skills on to family and apprentices. In 2020 'Hawker Culture in Singapore' was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
