Ludwig I

Ludwig I. von Bayern · Germany

King of Bavaria

He became King of Bavaria in 1825. A lover of ancient Greece and the Italian Renaissance, he commissioned many neoclassical buildings in Munich, including the Glyptothek, the Alte and Neue Pinakothek and the Ludwigstrasse. In 1810, as crown prince, he married Princess Therese, and the wedding celebrations became the first Oktoberfest. His affair with Lola Montez caused a scandal, and facing protests in the revolution of 1848 he abdicated in favour of his son Maximilian.

History · Munich Oktoberfest

A festival that grew out of a royal wedding

On 12 October 1810 Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria (later King Ludwig I) married Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. Celebrations were held on a meadow outside Munich, with a parade in regional costume — the first Oktoberfest; the venue was later named the 'Theresienwiese' after the princess.
