Stories and legends

The origin of Manting's name and the Dai queen's garden-touring legend, and Wild Elephant Valley's "Elephant Well" legend, each circulate in their own telling — the legendary layer.

History and context

Manting Park is said to have been the Dai king's imperial garden with a legendary history of over a thousand years; its General Buddhist Temple (Zong Fosi) is the central building of Theravada Buddhism (the present layout is rebuilt). Wild Elephant Valley, at the edge of the Mengyangzi reserve, is one of the main activity areas of China's wild Asian elephants, with an elevated elephant-viewing walkway and cable car; wild-elephant appearances are irregular natural events (the scenic area does not guarantee sightings). Xishuangbanna holds one of China's most complete tropical rainforest ecosystems, with the sky tree (wangtianshu) as an emblem.

Local life

Banna's temperament is "Southeast Asia within China": Dai brocade, stilt houses, gold-topped temples, night-market pounded chicken feet and Lao iced coffee, with time stretched out by the tropical languor. The Dai New Year Water-Splashing Festival (mid-April in the Gregorian calendar, per the prefecture government's announcement) runs citywide revelry in parallel with the solemn Buddha-bathing at the temples — the switch between secular and sacred is Banna's most charming daily rhythm.

Customs

Buddha-bathing and water-splashing revelry at the Water-Splashing Festival; remove shoes and dress past the knees and shoulders when entering temples; Dai weddings and ganbai (market festivals).

Beliefs

Theravada Buddhism is the faith of the whole Dai people, and the temples (Mian temples) are the villages' centres; the beliefs of the Jino, Hani and other peoples coexist.

Local etiquette

Close-up photography of Buddha statues inside temples follows on-site rules, and never touch a young monk's head (a great taboo in Dai and Buddhist etiquette); at Wild Elephant Valley keep your distance from wild elephants and never feed or shout at them (wild elephants are aggressive); never buy ivory or other elephant products (illegal and against conservation ethics — avoid anything sold as "elephant skin / ivory combs" without exception).

Visiting notes

Best in the dry season from November to April; room prices multiply during the Water-Splashing Festival — book early; at Wild Elephant Valley enter first thing in the morning (a relatively higher chance of elephant activity, still not guaranteed); it is about a 40-minute drive from downtown Jinghong to Wild Elephant Valley.

What to eat nearby

Dai hand-grabbed rice; lemongrass grilled fish; pineapple rice; pounded chicken feet; seasonal wild vegetables and fungi dishes; Lao iced coffee and paoluda

The Starlight Night Market at Gaozhuang Xishuangjing, Dai restaurants around the Mange farm market, and the riverside night market in downtown Jinghong

Take hand-grabbed rice with your hands (gloves are also provided) and share the dipping sauces; Dai food is heavily sour and spicy — state your spice level when ordering

A Dai meal 70–130 yuan (for reference only); night-market snacks 40–80 yuan per person (for reference only)

At the Starlight Night Market there is wide room to bargain over travel-photo shoots and trinkets, but for food choose clearly priced stalls; mosquito repellent and sun protection are rainforest necessities.
