Jade Dragon Snow Mountain
The sacred mountain in the hearts of the Naxi people: thirteen peaks in a row like a jade dragon, and the great cable car rises straight to the glacier park at 4,506 metres — the snow mountain nearest the equator writes altitude sickness into its ticket notices.
Location
Yulong Naxi Autonomous County, Lijiang, Yunnan Province
Stories and legends
The myths of the Jade Dragon and Haba Snow Mountain brothers and of the Jade Dragon turning into a dragon to protect the Naxi are widely told and belong to Naxi mythology.
History and context
The main peak, Shanzidou, stands 5,596 metres and has never been summited (that no one has successfully climbed it is a matter of public record). The range carries the southernmost temperate maritime glaciers in Eurasia (Baishui No. 1 Glacier is reached by the great cable car). The cable car's upper station is at 4,506 metres, and Blue Moon Valley is a blue-green water system of travertine deposits (blue on clear days). The scenic area runs tickets + cable-car reservations in time slots (per official rules), and its high-altitude travel notices are mandatory warnings.
Local life
Half of Jade Dragon's temperament is sacred and half is daily life: Naxi Dongba culture regards it as the incarnation of the god Sanduo and the nation's guardian, while Yuhu Village at its foot (associated with Joseph Rock's former residence) and Baisha old town keep the old shadows of the Tea-Horse Road. While visitors breathe oxygen and take photos in the glacier park, Naxi grannies sell yak jerky below the mountain — here the sacred mountain and livelihood do not contradict each other.
Customs
Mountain-entry fees (the scenic ticket system outside the old-town maintenance fee framework follows official rules); the Naxi Sanduo Festival (the eighth day of the second lunar month) is a great ethnic festival (with activities mainly in Lijiang's urban area).
Beliefs
The Naxi Dongba religion and Tibetan Buddhist influence coexist; Jade Dragon Snow Mountain itself is the core of the Naxi sacred-mountain faith.
Local etiquette
Altitude sickness is a real risk: at the cable car's upper station do not run vigorously or force yourself on with alcohol — if seriously unwell, descend at once, use oxygen and seek medical help; no climbing beyond the glacier boardwalks; never get into the water at Blue Moon Valley or trample the travertine flats (the water and deposit layers are fragile).
Visiting notes
Best from November to April (plentiful snow, high visibility); grab time-slot cable-car tickets in advance on the official mini-program; buy oxygen canisters in Lijiang city for a fairer price (they are expensive inside the scenic area); package the mountain with Blue Moon Valley and the Impression Lijiang show in one day (the show follows the official schedule).
What to eat nearby
Lijiang cured-rib hotpot; yak hotpot; Naxi grilled fish; jidou liangfen (chickpea jelly); Lijiang baba
The local-restaurant belts outside Dayan Old Town, around Xiangshan Market, and Baisha old town
Cured ribs are salty — drink the soup and eat the meat first, then blanch vegetables; on first arriving on the plateau, do not overeat or drink too much alcohol
Hotpot 90–160 yuan (for reference only)
Restaurant prices inside the old town routinely run about ten percent higher; locals mostly eat outside it; for snow-mountain day trips, agree taxi / carpool prices first and use proper platforms.
