Why it’s popular

A small unstaffed station on the coastal branch of the JR Yosan Line, served by only a handful of trains a day, its platform facing the Seto Inland Sea (Iyo Sea). Although it's famous among photographers from 'Seishun 18' posters and TV-drama locations, it's very hard to reach and sees few visitors, keeping its tranquillity of being 'forgotten by the world'.

Culture

Culture & customs

Background

Shimonada Station became famous in 1986 through films and posters, and is one of 'the stations closest to the sea in Japan'; Futami-chō in Iyo is a home of citrus and fishing, and 'Shimonada Coffee' beside the station, in a converted old JNR freight wagon, sells 'coffee time facing the sea'.

Local customs

  • The platform is narrow — don't sit on the edge by the tracks or lean out
  • step back behind the white line when trains arrive
  • the unstaffed station has no toilet, so go beforehand.

Religion & beliefs

None. The old townscapes of nearby Ōzu and Uchiko preserve the culture of 'ohenro' (the Shikoku pilgrimage), and you may see pilgrims in white along the way — greet them quietly.

Locals appreciate DO

The station master (a local resident volunteer) and the café owner appreciate travellers who 'come for one train and quietly wait for the sunset'
