Background
Volcanic tuff weathered into strange 'fairy chimney' pillars; early Christians fleeing persecution carved underground cities and rock-cut churches here, and the frescoes of the Göreme Open-Air Museum date back to the 10th–12th centuries. The tradition of living in caves continues, and many are now boutique hotels. Balloon flights began in the 1990s and have become the region's signature experience.
Local customs
- Locals are mostly Anatolian farmers and craftspeople
- pottery around Avanos and carpet weaving are traditional livelihoods. They are warm hosts and often offer Turkish tea.
Religion & beliefs
- The cave churches are mostly Byzantine Orthodox monuments, some still used for worship and pilgrimage, so keep quiet
- residents of nearby towns are mainly Muslim, so respect local religious customs.
