Background
The economic heart of Hokkaido in the Meiji and Taishō eras, whose stone warehouses along the canal are now glass workshops and music-box shops. At dusk the gas lamps come on and the canal reflects their warm yellow light, even more dreamlike on snowy nights; Otaru sushi, seafood rice bowls and the tinkle of music boxes are the right way to experience northern romance.
