Historia

The mountain estate of an Inca emperor

Machu Picchu was built around 1450; archaeologists generally believe it was a royal estate ordered by the Inca ruler Pachacuti after he conquered the Urubamba valley, though no contemporary written records confirm this. The Peruvian explorer Agustín Lizárraga had been there in the early 20th century, and the American historian Hiram Bingham's reports in 1911 made it world-famous. It was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 1983.

Contexto cultural

A 15th-century retreat of the Inca emperor that astonished the world after Hiram Bingham's 'discovery' in 1911; its dry-stone walls, Temple of the Sun and Inca Bridge tell of Inca astronomical and engineering genius. Named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007, the moment the clouds part and the ancient city appears is a highlight of a lifetime for countless people; descendants of the Quechua still live in the Sacred Valley, and the Inca bloodline lives on.
