Contexto cultural

In the early 17th century, as Amsterdam's population grew rapidly, the city drew up a master plan: four concentric semicircular canals, both ends opening onto the IJ. The Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht were mainly residential, while the outermost Singelgracht was for defence and water management. Today the city has more than 100 km of canals, about 90 islands and 1,500 bridges; in 2010 the 17th-century canal ring, together with the Jordaan, became a World Heritage Site.

Costumbres locales

  • The canal banks are residential and the houseboats are real homes
